The History of Almshouses and Sackville College

We’re delighted to announce that on 24 January 2020, Caroline Metcalf will give a talk at the Museum the history of almshouses, in particular the history of our neighbour, Sackville College.  Caroline will discuss the history of almshouses in England, how and why some were founded, and their traditions. She will draw upon what is known of Sackville College and its history, but will make comparisons with other almshouses as well.

Caroline is a guide for visitors at both Sackville College almshouse and St Swithun’s parish church. She has loved history from childhood and has spent her adult life studying and teaching History. She has an MA in Medieval Studies and is working on a fifteenth-century manuscript.

Tickets cost £5 each and may be reserved here.
