McGowan's Hurricane was shot up over southeast England, causing his engine to burst into flames. He parachuted into the Thames estuary, suffering from burns to his face and hands, and was pulled from the water and taken to hospital. He was later chosen by McIndoe to transfer to East Grinstead while he was touring hospitals looking for patients to help.
