Mathieson joined the RAF at 19, and flew 30 combat operations before his injury.

On return from an op over Germany, the windscreen of Mathieson's Lancaster shattered causing severe facial injuries and destroying his left eye. His co-pilot landed the plane after Mathieson was knocked unconscious.
