Pearce interrupted his teaching career to join the RAF as a P.E. Instructor. In 1942, while on a Defence Course, he had an accident that resulted in the loss of an eye, which led him to treatment at QVH. After returning to duty, he became a Education Officer, which he continued until the end of the war.
