Leupp joined the RCAF in Toronto at 19 years old, having not been accepted into the USAAF. He was posted to RAF OTU in 1942, flying Hurricanes in Scotland.

He preferred to work with animals, rather than wood- or metalwork, during his convalescence at Marchwood Park. Becomes a vet post war.
