Dove joined the RCAF after his high school graduation and trained at bases in Saskatchewan. He became a night-fighter pilot with RAF 256 Sqn.

He was injured in February 1942 - Dove had finished training for the day when a plane taxiing in collided with his car. One passenger was killed, and Dove and another person were injured.
