On his sixteenth operation, in May 1944, fog diverted them to Benson on return. On landing, their plane crashed into a small building and burst into flames. Redekopp was able to free himself from his turret, and dragged fellow Guinea Pig Owen Jones from the wreckage, unconscious, along with another crewmember, gaining severe burns in the process.
