Standen's Hampden bomber was waiting for take-off on the runway for a mine-laying operation when another Hampden taxied by and the wingtips of the two planes met. Both planes were set ablaze by the resulting static electricity discharge. Despite his injuries, Standen managed to get free of the aircraft and flung himself to ground just before the explosives blew.
