Perry joined the Air Training Corps at 16, and volunteered for aircrew at 18. Due to his engineering training, he trained as a flight engineer and joined with a Canadian crew.
His Halifax exploded at 300ft as it took off from RAF Topcliffe, Yorkshire, and he was thrown from the plane.
