Vince joined the RAF as aircrew at 19 years old, training as a flight engineer.

On return from a mission in Germany, Vince's crew noticed a German fighter had followed them back. As the Stirling came into land, the German fighter fired on them, causing the plane to catch fire. They managed to land safely, and all but one escaped the fire alive.
